Boston, MA—Boston Opera Collaborative (BOC) opens its 2006-2007 season with "Making a Scena," a colorful program designed to chronicle the history of Bel Canto ("beautiful singing") repertoire. Borrowing its title from the Italian term that refers to the basic structural unit of Italian romantic opera, this lecture/concert promises to entertain and educate with fully-staged scenes from works such as Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, and Bellini's Norma.
The program, which begins with operas from the classical era and moves forward, features a talented and experienced production staff. Stage director Andrew Ryker returns to BOC after directing this past summer's inaugural production of Iphigénie en Aulide. He is joined by Christine Fortner, who has extensive experience as a director at the New England Conservatory. Musical director and accompanist Steven Morris is a highly regarded vocal coach in the Boston area whose students have sung with Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Boston, and several other professional companies. He currently serves on the faculty at Tufts University.
BOC's 2006-2007 season, entitled "Visions of Youth," also includes Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, Puccini's La Bohème (in collaboration with Riverside Theatre Works), and Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites.
