Christina English, mezzo-soprano

Mezzo-soprano Christina English recently earned her Master of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she continues her studies with Carole Haber. In the 2006-07 season, Ms. English performed the roles of Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Second Witch in Dido and Aeneas and Juno in Orpheus in the Underworld with New England Conservatory. In the Summer of 2007, she was a Young Artist at the Seagle Music Colony, where she sang the role of Sappho in Mark Adamo's Lysistrata, as well as various supporting and chorus roles.
An equally passionate performer of art song, Ms. English frequently collaborates with contemporary composers. She was recently selected by composer John Heiss to perform his Songs from James Joyce for mezzo-soprano and clarinet in Jordan Hall, as well as by Malcolm Peyton to sing his Songs from Walt Whitman in concerts in Boston's Symphony Hall and New York's Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Her repertoire also includes Montsalvatge's Cinco Canciones Negras, Grieg’s Haugtussa, Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben, Stravinsky's Three Songs from William Shakespeare, and Satie's Trois Melodies de 1916.
Ms. English also performed the roles of Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Hänsel, Cenerentola, Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice), The Baroness (The Italian Straw Hat), Miss Todd (The Old Maid and the Thief), Elizabeth Proctor (The Crucible), Meg Page (Falstaff), the Secretary (The Consul), Bianca (The Rape of Lucretia), and Beatrice (Inquisitive Women) in scenes with New England Conservatory, Boston Opera Collaborative, Crittenden Opera Studio, and Riverside Theatreworks. In the summer of 2004, she sang Second Spirit in Operafestival di Roma's production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. The following summer, she returned as Cherubino in their production of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro.
An active member of Boston Opera Collaborative, Ms. English most recently sang Cherubino and Cherubin in BOC's innovative scenes program The Countess of Seville and Rosina in BOC's evening of bel canto opera scenes, Making a Scena. In addition she performed in the chorus and covered the role of Clytemnestra in BOC's inaugural production of Gluck's Iphigénie en Aulide.
